Its tricky running anything commercial these days here in the UK, the government and civil service don't like the self employed and small business so they introduce really awkward regulations a bit like Canada. I run out of a Ford Transit van because it rains so much here in the UK. Top video young man!
Yes the regulations really hurt the little guys. I love the new ford vans! If I was going to buy a new vehicle for welding it would 100% be a van.
In the rest of the world where we use 230V amps is not an issue. Standard 230V/16A house supply will work just fine
Good demonstration. Fluxcore is the wire version of stick welding and extremely strong.
Thank you this helps a lot I will be switching my leads
Awesome.
I know people are saying all these different soaps and products and you found a better hood already (btw i git the welding hood you recommended its amazing) but maybe if you heated it hot again an then pull it back in place but i understand you hate that hood so 😂 love the princess auto flip hood 👍
Yeah exactly. Even if I got a brand new one I still wouldn’t use it. Just can’t beat those cheap princess auto hoods!
@@JTwelder. love that princess auto hood 😂
I’m not sure whether safety and security aren’t issue where you are, but you might want to invest in a few pairs of $40 hockey puck locks with brackets that they use on cargo vans to secure your toolboxes as well as a cellular data plan security camera mounted above the cab facing the back of the truckso you can keep track of your assets
I have AirTag trackers in any all my expensive equipment. I would love some of those hockey puck locks but they don’t fit on any of my boxes. Luckily though I live and work in a very safe area. The only time I’m concerned about theft is whenever I have to stay at hotels overnight with the rig.
🚨If you’re gonna build an air compressor generator, you want to make sure you pressure test that air tank as it looks like it’s got a lot of rust and has been welded on 🚨
I pressure tested it by running it lol. Works perfectly fine.
Thanks for pointing out the drawbacks about the Miller and Lincoln generator welders
We really need some other manufacturers like mosa and esab to break into the full sized engine drive welder market in North America. Competition is always a good thing for the consumer.
Great content lately!..I’m guessing it’s a 5 series John Deere. H240 is just the model of loader arm
Thanks, Im going to try and upload 3 videos a month by July! Ah ok my bad, I don’t know much about tractors at all.
i like where your heads at on the way you use cheaper tools it worked for me for a long time
I try to keep my profit margins as high as possible and knowing how to use the tools I already have efficiently is a great way to do it. I can’t believe all the money some guys spend on top of the line equipment. In the end a lot of them hardly use a good amount of their tooling or end up not using them to their full capability, it just lost profits.
I have the same little welder generator as you have in the back. Thermal Arc TA170, I love it! Good duty cycle and pretty easy to move around, Honda engine kicks ass, welds everything I need it for. Anyhow back to watching your video lol
The duty cycle is great on that machine. Mine works ok but the arc isn’t very stable unfortunately. Not sure what would cause that.
I just want to make enough money to live in a small apartment.
That’s definitely possible as a welder.
I'd say you did things the smart way from cost perspective. Buys you time and savings to build a bed you want if needed in the future.
Yeah exactly! I decided to do a welding skid setup in the factory bed indefinitely now. Make the truck a welding rig and in 5 minutes I can remove the skid and have a regular truck.
I'm 22 and will be getting out of school soon. I know I'm probably going to be working like a dog for some years, but my goal is to get to a point where i can have a life apart from work. Travel, spend time with friends and family, go to church. And get good sleep. Is that a pipe dream (no pun intended lol) or a possibility?
That is totally possible!!! Work yourself to the bone for about 5-6 years live modestly and don’t buy stupid stuff like expensive trucks, cars, boats and off road toys. Save up your money and invest it as you work. You’ll end up with a really nice relief fund the you can take months of work eventually every year.
@@JTwelder. That would be a great goal to work towards then
Why does this shop look like chuckie2009's old shop?
Not sure. It’s definitely not the same shop as I don’t even live in the US.
I’ll be there
Thank you for the video i was just about to buy a outlaw leather flip front but you answered all of my questions.
How do find the higher paying jobs if I’m good at welding
If those are 5/8” holes can I mail you some alignment pins for your table? Would save you having to use a square like that to make 90°s
Hey man if there was enough space why didn’t you just cut out a 1/2 inch plate in one go ?
You got it. There wasn’t enough space for anything thicker than 1/4” in order for the back of the forks to clear it. When being adjusted. The reason for the expanded metal over just solid 1/4” plate is they wanted to easily be able to see through it.
Nice job! I really like the advice about not buying something till it costs you NOT to have it. Very good. There is so much equipment available for rent as well.
I forgot to mention that! Yes renting is also a super good option if you only need that expensive tool for one job!
Welding must be side hustle for you I also noticed that your not big on safety PPE look the foot wear where did you get a pair steal toe flip flops
No I own a rig welding company. Yes I do wear comfortable footwear when I think there’s no major hazards to my feet, is it the safest option? No it’s not but at the end of the day safety is a choice and you’re never going to convince people to be safer by leaving snarky ego fueled comments on RUclips videos.
Also own a fabrication and mobile welding company, and I’ll be damned if I wear boots all day in own shop.
So you haven’t driven a service or welding truck with a diesel engine but all through your video you’re just completely against a diesel engine? Some of these welders make some damn good money, so why wouldn’t they buy whatever they want?
I’ve never driven a fully loaded service truck with a crane and everything. I’ve driven a few f550 welding trucks both diesel and v10 gas. The whole point of this video is talking about what is the most profitable option. If someone wants to drive a diesel truck they totally can but it may not be the most profitable setup. I drive my trucks to make money so I’m gonna pick whatever cost me the least money in overall ownership and gets the job done.
What are the hours and how much did you pay for it? Im looking for a used one like that. Very nice!👍
500 hours on the engine and 40 hours on the compressor. I paid around $4000 usd for it. I got a deal because I purchased it from a company that was shutting down and liquidating. Normally they go for $7500-10,000 used. Before you buy one just know that the compressor is extremely expensive to service. Every 500 hours it requires a $1500 oil and filter change.
So what Temp & Rod size did ya use?
3/32 dia 7018 at 85-95 amps
A 👨🏾🏭 that leaves the guard on there grinder! You’re the first; that I’ve seen on RUclips period! 😂🎉😮
I hate running a grinder without a guard. With the guard on there’s so many more ways you can hold it to get into tight spots and not worry about it cutting your hand. Not using the guard is just plain stupidity imo.
Thanks
Great video but you should also mention that you lose your penetration. This technique works with stick as well when you don’t want undercut. But again if your needing something that needs to really hold (dual shield, bigger welder) than switching polarity is a bad choice.
You actually gain penetration with Gasless flux core in straight polarity. It’s designed to be ran only on straight polarity just like Tig. If you run it on reverse polarity the wire doesn’t burn properly causing splatter and it actually won’t penetrate much because of that. And as I mentioned in the video this is only for gasless flux core it doesn’t apply to gas shielded wire. What you’re saying is true for all other processes but always remember Tig and gasless flux core only run properly on straight polarity (electrode negative) and that’s by manufacturers specs.
@@JTwelder. This actually really great to know.
Good job on this video, Kid.Proud of you
Great info, I will say, I just picked up a new Titan 125 from Harber Freight (cheap as hell I know), and took it apart to check... From what I can tell they actually have the clamp wire hooked up to the positive side. Granted, it's "self inverted" or whatever, so it's not the same set up and connections as a proper Lincoln, but the clamp wire is connected to the transformer, and there is a seperate smaller red wire that runs to the board, and is labelled V+ . So that's good. Still splatters some, but not as bad as other machines I've used (that probably weren't set up correctly). Suppose I just need to dial in my wire speed.
I see a weird trend here in the USA, that people go to school, learn a trade and then cant find a job and have to pay tens of thousands of dollars in student debt. What is going on? why they say is in high demand if they are not willing to train new hires anymore?
I see the exact thing you’re talking about all the time! Thanks for pointing this out, I really should make a whole video on this. Here’s some quick reason why without writing a book for a reply. 1. Students come out of colleges cocky and entitled making them extremely hard to train on the job 2. The younger generation absolutely sucks at finding work. They say they try to get jobs but in reality all they do is send out their resume by email and expect the jobs to roll in. 3. Construction comes and goes in waves. Sometimes they need hundreds of thousands of people then 8 months later companies are laying off 60% of their workforce as they wait for the next bid. 4. Construction companies are absolutely horrible at advertising job openings. 5. Unions own a lot of the work in certain areas. They prefer to train and school new members themselves opposed to taking in college graduates.
Nice video, one question. Why don't you guys use a van instead? Like a Mercedes Sprinter, Iveco, WV? In Europe all welders and mechanics use them.
I forgot to mention vans. Very few guys have them but ideally I would like to run a van. Up until recently in North America the only option you had for a 4x4 van was the Mercedes sprinter so there wasn’t much for a used market and since it’s German there’s not many shops that know how to work on them properly. Now that ford and ram are making 4x4 vans I expect to see a lot more of them being used for a welding set up.
Local 169 (Retired), Detroit, Mi. Made a lot of money working/welding on boilers all over southern half of Michigan.
hey good info here thanks for posting. Im 37 years old, do you think its too late to get into this field? Sounds like the good welders all started out of high school. I went to college and worked in several jobs but im looking into trades now seeing the pay is even better.
It’s 37 isn’t bad at all. I’ve worked with quite a few apprentices that were in Their 40s. Just remember that the good money in welding only comes with lots of hours and travel. Almost no welders that work 40 hours a week within commuting distance of their residence make good money.
@JTwelder. Hey thanks for the quick reply. It seems like the kind of job you don't get into unless your passionate about also because it is dangerous. You can't just half ass it. And like you said if you want to work 40 hr weeks close to home the money is t there anyway.
My welder buddy welded some horse shoes off his truck and they super convenient to hang the hoods!
Cracks are typically there because of a bend // if not straightend after welding the wheel is only welded not fixed//
Over 10k wheel repair under my belt before you say i don't know // lol
Thank You I bet this is the problem with my welder
Brother you shouldn't have put this much work into a Dodge you could have put that 12 valve into a Ford and had a great truck check out zip ties and bias plies. That piece of dodgeis just going to RUST AWAY. I know I sound like I'm being an ashole but it's just the truth that Dodge was probably the worst truck you could have used.
The 12 valve vibrates too much for the transmissions used in the 6.0 and 6.4 power strokes. I’m am completely committed to keeping my work trucks as stock as possible. makes parts and repairs much easier and cheaper
10 yr old machine “new” 🥴🤦♀️
Watch the whole short before commenting.
Do you go fishing?
I don’t but I live in an area with lots and lots of lakes.
Ive got w 305d ranger. Just picked up a ln25 suitcase. Problem is my digital volt read out is bad so havent tried it yet. Hopefully your read out meter is only the problem.
I pulled the battery and recharged it recently because I accidentally left the switch on and killed it. Put the battery back in fully charged and the display is reading the voltage correctly again. I haven’t tried it yet with the ln25 but I will soon and see if it’s fixed.
After about 59years old the body started to fall apart, I'm 70 and its still falling apart Go become an electrician and this won't happen
Pipeliners cloud carbon hoods are stupid light. Even with an auto lense, better headgear, and a flip front they're lighter than a standard fibremetal without the flip front.
Super slick repair 👌 normally I do everything with stick but with a gap like that, wire was definitely the way to go for the root. I rarely use dual shield but it’s so good for something like that
Thanks! I always bring my wire feeder for cracks because you never know how wide your gonna have to open it up.
@@JTwelder. after having to Texas tig a few gaps you make space in that truck for the wire feeder lol
That insect is a Japanese water beetle (more often seen in evening and night than day) Those big pincers can bite purty darn hard.
I looked It up and it ended up being a giant water bug although it does look very similar to a beetle. They’re pretty vicious, apparently they can take out bull frogs and ducklings.
Sorry for your bad luck with the CV side of your welder. I noticed that you were going to run Fabshield 21B and a number of the You Tube weldors that I keep up with and highly respect are running that wire on heavy equipment. However, I once checked the specs on that wire and noticed it’s not Charpy V notch tested therefore, it’s not rated for impact properties similar to the Lincoln NR-211 and NR-212. That would concern me in this application. Have you had any re-cracking issues with this wire when using it on wear parts?
My plan was to root and hot pass with the wire on both sides because I knew it was going to be a wide gap then fill and cap with 7018. Since it the cv mode stopped working I was only able to root the one side. If I’m welding on metal 1/2 and ticker with wire I use a gas shielded flux core or T8 rated structural gas-less flux core like Lincoln 233 or 232 and Hobart xlr8 Your right though T11 wires like fab shield 21b, Lincoln 212 and 211 are only structurally rated up to 1/2 so it wouldn’t be ideal to weld a big crack like this one all the way out with it.
@@JTwelder. Thank you for the reply. It’s good to know that I wasn’t barking up the wrong tree 😏.
Fellow boilermaker Local 1. Gotta USA link?
Nice job man that looked like a very bad crack and took you all day at least you got paid good and did it right.
Thanks! I was charging my emergency rate as well so I made out pretty good in the end.
